From the Heart to the Hands: What a Dolce & Gabbana Exhibit in Paris Taught Me About the Art of Hosting

Updated: Jun 19

Inspired by Episode 8 of The Consummate Host

There are museums that educate. Exhibits that impress. And then—on rare occasions—there are collections that transport. During a recent trip to Paris, I had the pleasure of experiencing the Dolce & Gabbana “From the Heart to the Hands” exhibition at the Grand Palais Éphémère. To call it stunning would be an understatement. This wasn’t just fashion—it was philosophy, craft, culture, and devotion stitched into every seam. As someone who lives and breathes the art of hosting, what struck me most wasn’t only the garments themselves, but the emotional and visual storytelling that guided the exhibit. Each gallery offered not only couture, but a narrative—a sense of identity and intention. And isn't that exactly what a great event should do? Let’s step into the journey together.

Handmade

Handmade

In a world rushing toward automation, this gallery was a bold pause. Dolce & Gabbana’s Alta Moda collections, launched in 2012, are painstakingly crafted by Italian artisans—some from families who have practiced their craft for generations. This gallery celebrated embroidery, lacework, beading, and hand tailoring as the heartbeat of haute couture. Host’s Insight: Details matter. Consider replacing the mass-produced with the handmade— custom menus, hand-dyed linens, or even hand-tied floral bundles at each place setting.

Architectural & Pictorial

Architectural & Pictorial

With inspiration drawn from Europe’s great cathedrals and palaces, this gallery illustrated the symbiosis between structure and decoration. The garments borrowed shapes from buttresses and cornices, and surface embellishments reflected the influence of ceiling frescoes and stone inlay. Did You Know? Neoclassical architecture, with its balance and symmetry, has long influenced fashion—just as it informs timeless table design.

Host’s Insight: Build your tablescape like architecture—start with structure, then layer in beauty. Foundation first, then flourish.

Dream of Divinity

Dream of Divinity

In this unapologetically opulent gallery, every woman was queen, every man, a divine archetype. Embellishments shimmered like halos. Capes swept like ceremony. Host’s Insight: When hosting, give your guests a sense of elevation. A personalized name card. A thoughtfully lit path. A champagne flute waiting at the door. These small signals say, “You are seen. You belong here.”

Divine Mosaics

Divine Mosaics

A tribute to fragility and beauty, this collection reflected the way time shapes tradition. Embroidery mimicked cracked tile. Silhouettes had a whisper of antiquity. Did You Know? In Byzantine art, mosaics weren’t just decoration—they were spiritual portals, built to reflect light and guide contemplation. Host’s Insight: Use glass, mirrors, or reflective materials to bring softness and shimmer into your space. Host by candlelight and let time slow down.

Sicilian Traditions
Sicilian Traditions

Sicilian Traditions

Bright, vivid, and deeply personal—this gallery captured the soul of Sicily through bold prints, religious icons, and folkloric motifs. Even the walls and floors were hand-painted to reflect Mediterranean homes and marketplaces. Host’s Insight: Storytelling is POWERFUL. Invite tradition to your table—through heirloom dishes, regional recipes, or even the music playing softly in the background.

White Baroque

White Baroque

An exercise in restraint, this all-white gallery paid homage to the stuccoed interiors of 17th century Sicily. Devoid of color but rich in texture, it was sculptural serenity. Host’s Insight: A monochromatic palette doesn’t mean boring. Layer tone-on-tone textures— linen, porcelain, matte ceramics, crystal—for a quietly dramatic aesthetic.

 Devotion

Devotion

Here, Dolce & Gabbana placed the Sacred Heart motif center stage. It gleamed on corsets, handbags, and perfume bottles—burnished gold surrounded by floral embroidery or flame-like beadwork. Cultural Note: The Sacred Heart has been a spiritual and decorative symbol for centuries, representing love, sacrifice, and sacred connection. Host’s Insight: Anchor your space with one meaningful object. Let it guide the color palette or emotion of the room. It doesn’t have to be religious—but it should be intentional.

The Atelier

The Atelier

This gallery paid homage to the workspace—the quiet hum of creation where fashion is truly born. On display were sketches, tools, trims, and in-progress gowns. Host’s Insight: Beautiful events start in your version of an atelier. Keep a hosting journal, sketch out ideas, collect fabric swatches or dried florals. Cultivate creativity as a regular ritual.

The Leopard

Named after the film Il Gattopardo, this gallery mixed opulence and melancholy. It was moody. Cinematic. Evocative of Sicily’s aristocratic past and its cultural resilience. Host’s Insight: Let your next event have a soundtrack. Think of lighting as a camera would. Use shadows and spotlighting to draw the eye. Hosting can be cinematic, too.

Opera

Opera

Theater and real life blended beautifully here. Velvet. Drama. Gold. The message? You don’t have to wait for a stage to create spectacle. Host’s Insight: Treat EVERY gathering like a gala. The magic is in your hands.

Glasswork

The final gallery glowed. Drawing inspiration from Venetian glass artisans, this room shimmered with crystal-studded gowns and radiant accessories. Did You Know? Murano glassmakers have been perfecting their technique since the 13th century—and were once forbidden to leave Venice to protect their secrets. Host’s Insight: Don’t be afraid to sparkle. Use crystal, cut glass, or shimmering accents to catch the light—and the imagination.

The Takeaway: Curate, Don’t Just Decorate

The Dolce & Gabbana exhibit reminded me that a well-curated experience—whether in a museum or at your dining table—tells a story. It’s layered. Intentional. Emotional. And above all, human.

Our Manifesto Moment for this episode:

“We believe travel is the ultimate muse—inspiring ideas, flavors, and beauty.”

Next week, we begin a new chapter with Wayne’s Wonder List, a quarterly series where I’ll take you through the places I love most—and share the inspiration they’ve sparked in how I host, create, and live.

Until then, live beautifully.
